For over one-and-a-half century, the products of Mentis Ltd. decorated theatrical costumes, clerical vestments, military uniforms, traditional costumes, as well as creations of well-known fashion ateliers in Greece and abroad. This was the oldest commercial and manufacturing venture in the country, which operated from 1867 to 2011. When the business was forced to close in 2011, the Benaki Museum accepted the generous offer of the Mentis family, in order to create a living workshop / museum, taking the opportunity to preserve such know-how being lost. The Mentis Donation is housed in the old factory that belonged to the business at 6 Polyphemou Street, in Petralona. In line with the opening of this new endeavour, the Benaki Museum Shop will host an exhibition of works by 47 artists, who used as their raw materials products of MENTIS manufacture, in order to create objects with a contemporary aesthetic. papairlines proudly present the exhibition Once Upon A Sponge by, which opens on Thursday the 10th of May and will last until the 16th of June 2012, at TAF. The exhibition Once Upon A Sponge aims to showcase the different perpectives of design. Design is not just encountered in windows of high-end shops, but also something we experience and interact with on a daily basis: from a sign and a widely recognisable piece of furniture to a love note and a D.I.Y. object that adapts random and accessible materials. Design is about identifying, analysing and solving problems in our everyday life as well as commenting on social phenomena and behaviours. For the exhibition Once Upon A Sponge, 20 designers conceptualise and construct unexpected and imaginative narrative objects with the final destination being to show and tell stories through the use of the iconic yellow sponge. The sponge, a neglected everyday object, transforms into a construction material for the passengers – designers of papairlines who are invited to redefine the form and the established use of the sponge in order to challenge the perception of the public. The objects emerging from this process will be landing in TAF. From 01 July – 30 September 2012, Once Upon A Sponge is travelling to Santorini and will be presented during the Santorini Biennale of Arts parallel exhibitions Taxidi Bar | Old Tomato Factory | Perivolos Beach
1 December 2011 – 7 January 2012 Participating designers: Anastasiadou Ritsa, Bissas Costas, Chrissaiti Angela, DEDE Dextrous, Drakos Spyros, Kokkinos Alexandros, Lo Castro Maurizio, Mamoutzis Giannis, Marantidou Xara, Morali Christina, Mylonadis Vassilis, Papadaki Maria, Papakyriakos Dimitris, Petropoulos Stathis, Samelis John, Sotovikis Dionysis, Spyridonos Kallirroy, Stathopoulos Zaxos, STUDIOLAV, Vlioras Hristos, Zarifopoulos Minos. The first S M L XL Hellenic Design exhibition took place at Vamiali’s gallery from 1 December 2011 until 7 January 2012. The exhibition features the work of 21 Greek designers who experimented and created innovative utilitarian objects, mostly special commissions, in limited editions and aims to highlight the creative game behind creativity and design. A multitude of manufacturers and producers across Greece realise the designers’ ideas. The creative process was not the result of corporate or industrial planning, the objects did not materialise through the mobilisation of a diverse and impersonal taskforce; instead, designers reacted spontaneously to their audience’s needs. Projects were conceived and completed through transparent and ethical processes. Collaborative effort lied at the heart of the exhibition which makes visitors aware of the links between aesthetic value, utility, scale of production and final price; the latter is the gauge by which objects were classified into the S M L XL ranges. Parallel to that, the exhibition tries to promote the dynamics of Greek originality along with the effort of the people involved professionally in the field of product design, by taking the risk in these recent crucial times. The exhibition attempts to pose questions that today seem more critical than ever. Such as: -The relationship among functionality, aesthetics and even the market value of an object. -The relationship among the prototype design, prduction cost and the quantity. On the other hand S M L XL Hellenic Design exhibition aims to become the catalyst for a wide and open discussion regarding the issue of product design in Greece. The purpose and key idea of the exhibition is to help the viewers to understand the relation among the price, the functionality, the form, the design, the cost, differentiated in the 4 categories S M L XL (Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large). Conceived and organized by Hellenic Art & Design, Kallirroy Spyridonos.
